Critical Analysis of Two Articles Relating to Juvenile Criminal Justice: The Effectiveness of Juvenile Boot Camps (Shock-Incarceration Programs)
[ send me this paper ]
This is an 8 page paper giving a critical analysis of two articles in the assessment of juvenile boot camps’ effectiveness. Two articles are examined on the effectiveness of juvenile boot camps within the justice system: B. Zaehringer’s work in 1998 entitled “Juvenile boot camps: cost and effectiveness vs. residential facilities” (Koch Crime Institute White Paper Report); and, S.X. Zhang’s 1998 article “In search of hopeful glimpses: a critique of research strategies in current boot camp evaluations” (Crime and Delinquency 44(2), 314-334). Zaehringer’s study used national and research intensive data to support his conclusions and analysis of the system which in order to improve its effectiveness would need a much more comprehensive focus on aftercare and rehabilitation. Zhang’s article studied the effectiveness of the studies themselves, excluding Zaehringer’s, but admits he was not comprehensive in the studies that he surveyed. He in turn reported that the overall effectiveness of the boot camp system has not been proven despite the positive goals set by the boot camp administrators. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Deviant Behavior: Treatment, Incarceration Or Criminal Insanity?
[ send me this paper ]
12 pages in length. It can readily be argued that each and every person represents one subculture or another – that is to say that while the masses as a whole represent the culture, the individuals who make up that culture in turn represent the subcultures. In this light of understanding, one can then surmise that everyone – at one time or another – displays deviant behavior. However, deviance that inflicts physical and/or psychological harm upon another human being is crossing the boundaries of acceptable behavior, which is when the time comes to determine appropriate corrective measures. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
